To DIY Or Not To DIY?

,

We’ve all been there- binge watched 1000+ hours of HGTV and think we can do anything around our house. Or even watched many YouTube videos and think “pfft, that looks easy, I could do that!” only to discover- No, that really should have been left to the pros. So what are the relatively straightforward jobs that can be done by us, the homeowners? And what should be best left to the experts? Read on to find out:

Do it yourself:

Running Toilets

Hearing your toilet run nonstop is frustrating,  not only when you absentmindedly flush after making a midnight trip to the loo, and you can’t sleep because the toilet is far too loud- it can also affect your water bill.  However, it might simply be a case of adjusting the float or draining your toilet tank to replace the seal, a simple at-home fix after a trip to a hardware store, and with minimal expense.

Exposed Leaky Pipes

Similarly, a leaking pipe under your sink could be as easy as tightening a nut or coupling with simple clamps. However, if you suspect a leaking pipe in a wall, its probably time to call a plumber.

Clearing The Eaves

While it is not the prettiest job, removing all the brush and garbage from your eavesdrops yourself can save you a pretty penny.  As long as you are comfortable on a ladder, have a spotter, and follow all ladder safety rules, this is a task that you can accomplish on your own time.

Repairing Drywall

A hole, whether from a nail or an accidental bump, can typically be repaired with putty and a spackle knife. If the hole is larger, a patch kit may be needed. Just double check to make sure you still have the name and brand of your wall paint (or even better, some leftover paint!)  beforehand to cover the putty and for touch-ups.

Leave It To A Pro:

Fixing Windows

Many times, it is difficult for an untrained eye to determine the source of that draft or a sticking window. Secure windows keep your home warm and dry when the temperature drops, is your first defense when a storm blows in, and can keep your heating and/or AC bill in check.  For all these reasons, calling in an expert may be a wise investment.

Updating Your Insurance Policy

If you’ve made changes to your home recently, it may be time to revisit your policy. Insurance brokers can help by shopping around for the right coverage and price.
